Project Leader - Designer Management (Mechanical)
Would you like to lead a design team tasked with achieving deliverables, working to plan, meeting review dates and ensuring that design requirements are met? BAES currently has a vacancy for a Technical Project Leader - Designer Management (Mechanical) at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Technical Project Leader (Mechanical) you will support and lead a team of Designers who will have different levels of experience and knowledge across the Submarine function.
The Mechanical Design teams are responsible for the 3D integration of routed systems and equipment's as well outputs (e.g. 2D diagrams, installation drawings and part lists etc.) to production and other customer stakeholders. In this role you will support the programme in delivering to schedule, cost, safety and quality. You will also be responsible for the development of members of your team in your people management role.
This role will provide you with a daily challenge of working with stakeholder groups to solve problems and drive solutions between design requirements and spatial constraints.
Your main responsibilities as a Project Leader - Designer Management (Mechanical) will involve:
Modelling and outputting various mechanical routed system or mechanical compartment delivery to schedule, budget, safety and quality consistent with contractual requirements
Promoting the development of Designers within your team through grade progression (PDRs, PDPs etc.)
Developing and maintaining working relationships with other interfacing design teams and stakeholders
Working with your customers (e.g. the Client, Engineers, Operability, Planning, Build and Test etc.) to produce an integrated design that meets their expectations and agreed requirements and is consistent with contractual requirements. Examples of good communications include writing (e.g. letters and emails), telephone conversations and face-to-face meetings.
Attending and contribute to major area team design reviews
Deputising for your Engineering Manager as necessary
Acting, when required, as either a member or leader of a temporary group established to accomplish tasks of a specialist nature (e.g. Construction Engineering, Toolset reviews / development, Best Practice and Problem Solving Team)
Training and mentoring team members in team specific activities.
Scheduling own work and team members work to meet target timescales and budget demands, including the creation of task plans where appropriate.
Contributing to Engineering Standards, Process Instructions, Technical Department Instructions (TDI's), Workmanship Standards and Risk Assessments etc. to characterise the work of the team as well the understanding and application of these documents relevant to your team e.g.
Engineering TDI 082 -Pipe Modelling (Primitive / Detailed) Stage 1 and 2
Supporting both individuals, the team and other functions within the business when required
Regularly dealing with outside Suppliers

Your skills and qualifications:
Engineering or Designer / Draughtspersons background
Understanding of Pipe / HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning) routed systems as well integration of Compartments within the mechanical discipline
Experience of the mechanical discipline working through various design stages, outputs and build
Submarine or Surface Ships product knowledge / experience
Understanding of CAD modelling techniques
Experience and knowledge of FORAN, CADDS5 or NX packages
Ability to utilise Teamcenter (PLM) toolsets
Experience of working with programme stakeholder representatives
ILM certificate or equivalent managerial / supervisory qualification
