Joiner Apprentice

Glasgow

As a Joinery Apprentice you will learn the skills and techniques required for manufacturing and refurbishing a wide range of wooden & sheet metal furniture and fittings. On site due to the modern day design of shipbuilding your main experience will come with metal work however you will also gain experience in woodworking throughout your apprenticeship.  You will be taught how to restore heritage woodwork, learn about the range of joints to be used, the suitability of materials for specific roles, and the types of finishes to be applied. 

What Does The Apprenticeship Involve?

As a joiner apprentice, you will learn the skills and techniques required for manufacturing and refurbishing a wide range of wooden & sheet metal furniture and fittings. You will be taught how to restore heritage woodwork, learn about the range of joints to be used, the suitability of materials for specific roles, and the types of finishes to be applied. You will also have the opportunity to develop your experience in metal work by fabricating and installing ship furniture and cabin modules. You will also learn how to use portable and fixed wood machines and be trained to work in various environments both ashore and afloat.  You will be trained in manufacturing and repairing items such as ships’ furniture, cabin modules, deck coverings, ladders and gangways.  You will also be trained in the safe use of hand tools and machines, the installation of manufactured and procured items aboard ship, and Health and Safety in the workplace.

What Qualification Will You Get?

SCQF Level 6 in Construction

Entry Requirements

5 National 4s (or equivalent) to include English, Maths and a Science or Technical Subject
