• Develop an understanding of and support the delivery of authoritative metallurgical advice and guidance to the wider BAES community, including facilities/infrastructure, Naval Ships and Global Combat Systems.
• Develop an understanding of and support the delivery of metallurgical advice and guidance to Submarine design engineering teams to ensure the use of appropriate materials, processes and the management of corrosion.
• Support the review of supplier technical and special processes related to metallurgy, corrosion prevention and welding engineering.
• Contribute to the conduct and reporting of metallurgical investigations and research, including the preparation of samples, safe and correct use of laboratory and workshop equipment, conduct of analysis and the preparation of test results and technical reports.
• Contribute to the technical evaluation of new materials and manufacturing processes.
• Support weld engineers in the assessment of pipe welds, structural welds and cladding, including preparation and mechanical testing of samples.
• Contribute to the review and maintenance of relevant Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments.
Non-metallics Part 2
• Provide expertise to the business on non-metallic materials technology and polymers.
• Maintain and further develop the non-metallic database for submarine atmosphere control and reactor safety.
• Monitor, control and record the use of non-metallic materials throughout the submarine.
• Actively pursue new developments in non-metallic materials for potential use on submarines.
• Liaise internally, and with suppliers to ensure material controls are properly enforced.
• Awareness of Fire/Smoke/Toxicity and Nuclear Safety issues. To maintain non-metallic materials database.
• To update process instructions which control non-metallic materials.
• To monitor, control and record the use of non-metallic materials both throughout the submarine and across the business unit.
• To keep line manager fully informed regarding emergent non-metallic materials issues.

What you will be doing… (Role Duties and Responsibilities)

Materials Technology Engineers provide a end-to-end service to the Submarines Programme, from concept and technology development through design support and material testing to in-service support.

The Materials Technology department pride themselves on a proactive approach to support and the ability to support reactive work with specialist testing laboratory.

Entry Requirements and what we are looking for

To apply, you’ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy/Materials Science or equivalent - Preference towards metallic materials modules, corrosion and joining.

Overview of Business Unit

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
Today we are the prime contractor in the Astute programme and the UK’s only designer and builder of nuclear powered submarines – one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges. The first three submarines in the class, HMS Astute, HMS Ambush and HMS Artful, are now in service with the Royal Navy and the final four Astute class submarines are at various stages of construction at the Barrow site.
We are also the industrial lead for the Dreadnought programme, the Royal Navy’s next generation of nuclear deterrent submarines. Construction of the first of four submarines, named Dreadnought, began last year
Our Submarines business employs approximately 8,700 people and in 2017 we spent around £700m with over 700 suppliers.
